2016 Fall Arts Preview
As classes begin again, so do a host of concerts, plays and art exhibits at venues around the 黑料门 campus. Here鈥檚 a look at what鈥檚 happening in the DU arts scene this fall.
听
MUSIC
On the south side of campus, the听听hosts performances from touring artists around the globe, as well as showcasing the talent of faculty and students from DU鈥檚 own听.
The听听concert series brings a number of dancers and musicians to the venue this fall, including modern dance phenomenon听MOMIX听(Sept. 29鈥30); political satirists听Capitol Steps. (Oct. 6); the听Los听Angeles Guitar Quartet (Oct. 20); jazz vocalist听Cecile McLorin Salvant听(Nov. 30); and the听Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center (Dec. 12).
The highlight of the Lamont School鈥檚 schedule is听鈥Ode to Nature鈥听(Oct. 10鈥11), a world-premiere dance oratorio composed by Beijing鈥檚 Zhou Jiaojiao and performed by the Lamont Symphony Orchestra along with a number of Chinese and American instrumental soloists, opera singers and dance artists.听
Other fall concerts at Lamont include the听Lamont Wind Ensemble听(Oct. 17); a performance by听student jazz groups听(Nov. 2); 鈥淎 Night at the Opera,鈥 a collaboration between the听Lamont Symphony Orchestra听and听Lamont Opera Theatre听(Nov. 3); the annual听Lamont Composers Series Concert听(Nov. 13), featuring works composed by Lamont students; and a jazz faculty recital featuring pianist听Eric Gunnison听and guitarist听Mike Abbott听(Nov. 15).
A quarter-ending series of free concerts showcases student musicians in the听Lamont World Music and Dance Ensemble听(Nov. 4); the听Lamont Jazz Orchestra听(Nov. 7);听Lamont String Chamber Ensembles听(Nov. 7); the听Lamont Percussion Ensemble听(Nov. 8); the student new music ensemble听Modern Hue听(Nov. 12); the听Lamont Steel Drum Ensemble(Nov. 14); the听Lamont Chorale, Lamont Women鈥檚 Chorus听and听Lamont Men鈥檚 Choir听(Nov. 15); the听Lamont Wind Ensemble听(Nov. 16);听Lamont Guitar Ensembles听(Nov. 16); and听Lamont Wind Chamber Ensembles听(Nov. 18).

VISUAL ART AND EXHIBITS
听
The primary venue for visual art at the 黑料门 is the听听in the Shwayder Art Building, which hosts a major exhibit this fall on Latino mural art.
Created in collaboration with 黑料门鈥檚 Museo de las Americas,听鈥淭he Wall: Latino Muralists, Immigration and Identity鈥听features work by contemporary Latino artists working in the muralist tradition. The exhibition, which runs Sept. 29鈥慛ov. 13, will showcases the work of several local and regional muralists, along with works by international artists. The exhibition explores how mural art is created and placed, as well the ways in which mural art can express either sociopolitical viewpoints or advertising and commercial messages.
DU鈥檚听, housed in Sturm Hall, presents听鈥淭sitsistas: Our Cheyenne Family,鈥听featuring work by Southern Cheyenne artist George Curtis Levi, Oct. 3鈥揘ov. 23. Levi鈥檚 ledger drawing, beadwork and parfleche (rawhide art) tell stories of where the Cheyenne come from, where they are today and where they are going in the future.
Educational and history-focused exhibits are on display this fall at the听听(AAC), including听鈥淐ircle of Sisters/Circle of Friends,鈥听featuring stories and mementos from the coalition of civilian women who served with various organizations in Vietnam and throughout Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War;听鈥淩ising Stars: 黑料门 Civic Ballet and Ballet Guild,鈥听which explores the history and impact of the 黑料门 Civic Ballet, 黑料门鈥檚 first semiprofessional ballet company;听鈥淧layful & Inviting: Publicity Posters of Theatre Productions at DU in the 1950s鈥; and听鈥淏lazing the Trail: Colorado Jewish History,鈥听which traces the central role of 黑料门鈥檚 early Jews in the city鈥檚 growth and prosperity.

THEATER
Offerings from DU's听听this fall include a staged reading of Theresa Rebeck鈥檚听鈥淪unday on the Rocks鈥听(Sept. 23), a play about four female roommates each dealing with her own crisis or confusion;听鈥淓虫颈濒别诲鈥听(Oct. 13鈥23), a 鈥渄evised exploration set in the deep life-consuming waters of global displacement鈥; and Yasmina Reza鈥檚 Tony-winning听鈥淎谤迟鈥听(Nov. 13鈥13), a comedy about three friends who are thrown into unexpected chaos when one of them spends a small fortune on a modern painting.
