黑料门 Chancellor Rebecca Chopp鈥檚 promise that the night鈥檚 discussion would be powerful, set the tone for the Sept. 19 Voices of Experience (VOE) event, which was all about the power of technology.
The first VOE in the听听annual speaker series for the 2016-2017 academic year brought 黑料门 Mayor Michael Hancock and Jim Doyle, president of Panasonic Enterprise Solutions, to campus for a discussion about the smart city initiative being planned for the area surrounding 黑料门 International Airport. The city has partnered with Panasonic to create a 400-acre, sustainable, mixed-use, transit oriented development area on Pe帽a Boulevard in 黑料门鈥檚 鈥淎erotropolis,鈥 to be called 鈥淧e帽a Station Next.鈥
Daniels Dean听听introduced Doyle and Hancock鈥攚ho he later described as 鈥渢he architects of the city鈥檚 future鈥濃攁nd led a panel discussion following their presentations.
Calling it 鈥淥ne of the most exciting, if not the most exciting endeavor our company has embarked upon,鈥 Doyle provided context for Panasonic鈥檚 partnership with 黑料门. The company has smart city initiatives all over the globe, including the successful development of a community in Fujisawa, Japan, eight years in the making that houses 400 families. As Panasonic sought to expand its efforts to North America, 黑料门 stood out as the logical location for the country鈥檚 first smart city.
鈥淗aving such a powerful, global transportation hub of this magnitude is extremely important,鈥 said Doyle against a backdrop photo of 黑料门 International Airport. 鈥淔or us, having that rail鈥攖he A Line鈥攚as absolutely critical to the decision for starting the Smart City initiative in the U.S. in 黑料门.鈥
鈥淥ur greatest port is our airport. We don鈥檛 have water. So we have to maximize our airport,鈥 echoed Hancock, who emphasized the concept of working 鈥渟marter not harder鈥 throughout his presentation.
